Shipping in Public: Our Studio Notes

This summer we opened our internal weekly notes — what we shipped, what we cut, what we learned — to anyone who wanted to read them. We thought it would be a small experiment. It changed how the studio runs.

What we learned writing in the open

Writing the note made us decide what was actually important about the week. The act of editing — of cutting it down to what we’d defend in public — surfaced patterns we wouldn’t have seen scrolling through internal Slack. A bad week, articulated, is a roadmap. A good week, articulated, is a system worth keeping.

It also made us answerable in a way we weren’t before. When a project drifted, the drift had to be explained. When something shipped, the story had to be told without the marketing varnish. That accountability compounds. The studio runs cleaner now because we know we’ll have to write about it.

The smallest operational habit that paid off

One sentence at the top of every Friday note: “If you only read this far, here’s what mattered.” It forced us to triage. It forced the reader to leave with one thing. Most of the studio’s quiet improvements come from that one sentence.
